Position

To some people a position means responsibility. To some it means power. And to some, a position is just a meaningless word.

Those who see a position as responsibility give it everything they have and use it for the good of people. If for some reason they fail, they step down, because they know they aren’t right for it. They also know that if someone suitable takes the position, good may come of it, and that holding on to it would only stand in the way of people who deserve it.

For those who see a position as power, the position is everything. They want it only so they can misuse it. In the end, all their position serves is their own interest. They are so greedy for it that they never want to let it go. They use every bit of power they have to keep it, and if society suffers, they don’t care.

And for those to whom a position is just a meaningless word, giving them one or not makes no difference. Being in the position is the same as not being in it. You’ll never find them when there’s work to do. Giving them a position is knowingly wasting it.

For some reason ours is a society of positions. It judges people by their position. How someone uses their position doesn’t matter to society. What their position is, that’s all that counts.

Strange society, and strange are its ways.
