Sorrow sits gloomily with his chin in his hand. People brush right past him, but nobody asks how he is. Some people see him sitting there and take another road, afraid he might follow them! He sits there, alone, and just keeps sitting. Nobody likes him, so nobody pays him any attention. The thing is, he comes without being asked. However many times you tell him not to, he doesn’t listen and walks right into your house. He probably doesn’t know himself what he wants from anyone. Everyone wants to throw him out by the scruff of his neck, but he hunkers down and won’t leave. Whenever he feels like it, he goes to someone else’s house. It’s the same there. Nobody wants him. Still, shameless as he is, he goes everywhere, from this house to that. Swear at him and he doesn’t mind. His name has become a kind of swear word anyway. People fear him and hate him, but none of that matters to him.
Sorrow never wants to be like Happiness. Happiness is the one people hold closest. Some give away everything they have just to see him once. But because he’s given so much importance, Happiness doesn’t care about anyone. Now and then he peeks in for a moment, just to see what everyone is doing to get him, and to enjoy watching. He is cruel. Happiness is very cruel and heartless. He knows everyone is giving away the last of their savings to get him, or not even that, just to catch a glimpse of him. And still he doesn’t feel the slightest wish to visit anyone’s home.
Why is Happiness so heartless?
Has he grown proud and full of himself because everyone wants him so much? Or does he think others don’t matter because he matters so much?
Nobody thinks about it. Nobody even wants to. Everyone just wants him, blindly. They have to see him at least once, even if it costs them everything. Once, just once.
But people don’t understand. He only comes in the good times of life, when we don’t need him at all and it wouldn’t matter if he didn’t come. He visits someone only when they’ve stopped waiting for him and given up hope of seeing him, because he doesn’t want anyone to stop caring about him. He shows himself for a moment, makes everyone want him even more, and leaves. Then he sits in his palace and watches everyone doing all sorts of things for him.
Sorrow, the one we hate and dislike, is actually our companion in our hardest times. He’s always there beside us. But we misunderstand him and think the hard times come because of him. Everyone neglects him for no reason. We treat him like an enemy, but he thinks of us as good friends. That’s why he stays beside us in our hardest times, beside everyone, even when we don’t want him.
